 The PACE method

(Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy) by Dan Hughes PhD

  • Does your child have difficulty dealing with strong emotions or getting back to a calm state after stressful situations?
  • Does your child behave aggressively often, have difficulties keeping focused and listening to the adult, at home or at school?
  • Does your child tend to run off or hide when stressed?
  • Does your child have a tendency to get angry with you, even when you are trying to help?
  • Does your child communicate his interests easily; his joys, his fears, his sorrows or the reasons behind his anger with you

The primary goal of Dr. Hughes’ PACE method is to create a safe emotional space; to optimize the child’s development and to let him express himself freely, without judgment.  This is possible by using both verbal and non-verbal communication that reflects acceptance and empathy.  PACE allows the child to feel understood and therefore validated, in the emotions he experiences.  PACE reduces stress, deepens the child’s understanding of others’ behaviours and needs while promoting authentic, reciprocal communication.

This method is beneficial for all human relationships: parent/child, parent/adolescent, teacher/educator/student, friend/friend and couples.

It is therefore with great pleasure that I share with you the basic principles of the PACE method since it has greatly facilitated the relationships that I establish with children during therapy, as well as in my professional interactions and in my personal life.

Emilie Leduc, Occupational Therapist

Emilie has been a pediatric occupational therapist since 2014. After completing her master’s degree, she started working at l’Essence en mouvement, therapeutic intervention center with Annemarie Couture, founder and clinical director. Curious and intrigued, Emilie deepened her knowledge by studying the latest developments in Neuroscience from the United States. She prioritizes a sensory, emotional, motor and regulation approach in the different environments where she works. She works in daycares and schools in addition to private practice settings with children having different challenges or diagnoses such as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, difficulties dealing with emotions, attachment disorders, autism, gross and fine motor difficulties, etc. Emilie feels that each child is unique and shines differently.
